Announcing my latest novel … which is a redo of an old book.
Way back in 2014, I wrote a technothriller called Day of the Drone. As the name implies, it was about weaponized drones being used in warfare and terrorism, both domestic and international. The book did so-so, even though I thought it was pretty good.
As it turns out, the book was ahead of its time. By about a decade.
Now, headlines speak of the threat of drones nearly every day … just as I detailed in Day of the Drone. Because of all the new interest in drone warfare, I was motivated to do a major update of the book, a full edit, and a name change to BuzzKill (what the drone pilots in my story call the sound of approaching killer drones).
Although I wrote the original book in 2014, many of the concepts I discussed have either come true or are fast becoming reality. I’m sorry about that; I can’t be responsible for what evil people do. But you can imagine how many times over the past ten years I’ve said to myself and friends, “That was in my book!”
BuzzKill is set fifteen years in the future and details the activities of the Rapid Defense Center (RDC), the clearinghouse for America’s defense against killer drone attacks, which are happening at an accelerating pace, striking malls, sports venues, financial centers and more.
Xander Moore is the senior pilot at the Rapid Defense Center. Although only in his mid-thirties, he’s the ‘old man’ at the Center, as other pilots are barely out of high school. But these kids, as gamers most of their lives, are skilled at remote drone operation and combat tactics. They are America’s first line of defense against a growing threat that uses toys and tools as weapons — consumer drones (UAVs — Unmanned Aerial Vehicles).
But now a coalition of radical groups from across the planet has taken out the Rapid Defense Center in a devastating surprise attack, severing the only link to thousands of defensive drones located in every major city in the country. America is now at the mercy of thousands of free-roaming attack drones striking at the very heart and lifeblood of our society — our economy, national monuments and more.
In a desperate race against time, Xander and his unintended partner — the gorgeous broadcast journalist Tiffany Collins — must avoid vindictive hit squads and killer drones operated from halfway around the world. An answer has to be found for the unbridled death and destruction taking place. Soon, Xander and Tiffany are in the fight of their lives, not only to stay alive … but also to stop the people behind the attack on the RDC. This is now more than just a game. This is kill or be killed, and with killer drones as the weapon of choice.
Monuments will fall, and icons will crumble when you hear the sound of impending doom closing in on you. This is a heart-pounding, sweat-evoking technothriller of the first degree that will have you hooked from the first page to the last.
Just remember to say your prayers and hope your insurance policy is paid up.
Because by the time you hear the BuzzKill … it’s too late.
